Homebrewing has been a means of concocting beer for many thousands of years. Generally, the process is long, laborious, and messy. One Seattle-based company is now hoping to change that. Financed by a Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $2 million, PicoBrew designed the Pico, a countertop appliance that makes roughly fourteen bottles of beer with digital precision, and little to no mess. And not just any beer—you can re-create beer from brands such as Rogue and Dogfish Head in just a few pushes of the buttons.
The machine works in a similar fashion to Keurig and Nespresso coffeemakers. A PicoPak unit is inserted into the Pico machine, where water is heated just under the point of boiling and circulated throughout the machine. After two hours, the biodegradable PicoPak—which contains ingredients such as grain, sugar, and hops—can be thrown away. From there, beer enthusiasts will need to wait roughly one week for the liquid to ferment at room temperature within the machine. The Pico is smartphone-friendly, and will alert users when the beer is done. The final step is chilling and serving. The Pico is available to order now for $599; prices will go up to $899 in the spring when the product will be ready for ship.
