Easier to pedal than a bicycle, more energy efficient than a moped, and certainly lower maintenance than a car, the electric bicycle (or e-bike as it’s commonly called) is quickly establishing itself as one of the most practical sets of wheels on the market. Not surprisingly, wunderkind Bjarke Ingels —with the help of his design firm, KiBiSi—has taken his virtuosic hand to the forward-looking ride, debuting the Biomega OKO, available for preorder this week.
Fitted with a battery in its middle bar and an engine in its front wheel hub, the carbon-fiber bike weighs in around 44 pounds, making it one of the lightest of its kind. Also called a pedelec, the device uses a small electric motor assists with pedaling. With that bit of extra help, biking around town still engages the body but no longer leaves you sweaty and sore. In a way, it functions rather like a moped, only it’s more environmentally friendly, and instead of filling it up with gas, you simply plug it in at night to recharge.
The OKO—$2,295 for a two-speed and $2,695 for an eight-speed—is available for preorder now through Austere and will ship in December; austereo
