We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: A great bed is a gift that keeps on giving. Whether you want to clock in a blissful eight hours of sleep or spend the entire weekend catching up on your favorite TV shows , you spend a lot of time in your bed, so it’s important to create a space that is both comfortable and stylish.
“Comfort is definitely key,” explains Vicki Fulop, co-founder of Brooklinen. “Think about a good night’s sleep: You feel best when you’re not too hot or cold, when nothing’s itchy, and when your sheets aren’t sticking to you. There are a lot of tactile things that make your bed feel amazing and that help you wake up feeling fresh.”
Your bed is an incredibly personal part of your home, but that doesn’t mean it’s free of the occasional mistake or two. From sub-par materials to a styling slipup, one false move could make your time spent in bed less enjoyable.
We asked two experts about the biggest mistakes people often make with their bed—and how to fix ’em.
Mistake 1: You’re Obsessed With Thread Count
Let’s face it: Ever since you started buying your own sheets, you probably spent an excessive amount of time analyzing a set of sheets’ thread count. The truth?
“It’s largely a marketing gimmick,” says Ariel Kaye, founder of Parachute . “What actually matters more than thread count is the caliber of the fibers.”
All that thread count really refers to the number of threads woven vertically and horizontally into a square. Sure, your sheets can have a high thread count, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re high-quality. Instead, you should keep an eye out for the quality of the material itself. At Parachute , Kaye uses 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton and pure linen, which translates to softer, stronger bedding that lasts over time.
Mistake 2: You Aren’t Listening to Your Body
When it comes to selecting a duvet, it can be all too easy to pick the plushest, most reasonably priced option and call it a day. However, it’s imperative to purchase bedding that works with your sleep preferences, not against them.
“The most important thing to consider when buying a comforter or blanket is your climate and how you like to sleep,” Kaye says.
Most brands—Parachute and Brooklinen included—make two different kinds of comforters: A lightweight and all-season. While lightweight comforters are a great option for anyone who runs hot when they sleep, an all-season option has more fill power and is perfect for keeping you warm on a particularly cold night.
Mistake 3: You’re Only Using White Sheets
Sure, a set of crisp white sheets can give your space that dreamy, hotel feeling; however, it can veer into boring territory pretty quickly. Instead, spice up your space by mixing and matching fun prints and colors.
“We love seeing our customers use their bedding as an extension of personal style, and encourage mixing and matching with different weaves, prints, and colorways,” Fulop says. “I think you can style your bed the way you style an outfit, and change it up to suit your taste of the moment.”
Fulop uses Brooklinen’s moss and cream colorways for a neutral, earthy look. If you’re carving a fun jolt of color, she recommends a cheery hue like Brooklinen’s petal or pomegranate.

Mistake 4: Your Bed is Too Perfect
Contrary to what your parents say, it’s actually kind of cool not to have a picture-perfect, hospital cornered bed.
“Unfussy beds are really having a moment, and that people are discovering how amazing linen is more than ever,” Fulop says. “It feels like butterfly kisses and is so cozy year-round.”
Of course, that doesn’t mean your bed should look messy. Check out these seven styles for the perfect unmade look for your personality.
