In the decade since founding their Austin, Texas-based firm, Juan Miró (right), son of a Spanish architect, and Miguel Rivera, whose father was a contractor, have produced a variety of commercial, cultural and residential buildings—the hallmarks of which are durability, low energy consumption and an often sculptural beauty.
“We are interested in ancient cultures and trying to understand the reasons people build what they build,” they say, and they are forever “looking for the universal, underlying common threads: the quests for comfort, permanence or meaning.” As supporters of the Trail Foundation at Lady Bird Lake, the firm designed, pro bono, a unique trailside restroom facility that has received international recognition. They encourage their clients “to put in writing a wish list, in no particular order, things big and small, even things that seem contradictory.” Their forthcoming projects include new buildings for the Central Texas nonprofits Family Eldercare and LifeWorks.
