The ocean’s breathtaking views, coastal landscapes, and sea-salt air are not only energizing but inspiring. Perhaps that is why many stunning examples of architecture can be found seaside. Some of the most innovative oceanside homes in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and New Zealand are documented in the new book Seaside Living: 50 Remarkable Houses (Images Publishing, $60) .
The selection, curated by the publisher’s senior designer Rod Gilbert, ranges from homes that blend into the environment—in concept and materials used—to estates that boldly stand out. Many of the properties were built with sustainability in mind, using reclaimed or recycled materials to create structures that both concede to and settle comfortably into their surroundings.
“These architects have used both traditional and modern forms to create houses of remarkable beauty for their rarefied environments, hopefully making them better places for both their owners and the general public to enjoy,” writes architectural photographer Russell Abraham, who wrote the book’s introduction.
Regardless of style or scale, every home calls to mind the sense of relaxation that comes with living near the beach—and that’s something worth taking another look at.
